Gaultier still plays with dolls !
Everybody knows that Diet Coke has an impressive history of working with icons from the fashion world: Karl Lagerfeld, Sonia Rykiel, Jean Charles de Castelbajac and Manolo Blahnik have already created their own versions of the iconic silver bottle. But this time, the event is truly impressive as Jean Paul Gaultier has just been named as creative director for the legendary drink! This is the first time that a designer will be involved in so many aspects of the brand.
Questioned on this collaboration between the American brand and the designer à la française, he declared: "The brand asked me to explore its fun side and re-style the bottle. I wanted to present consumers with the hallmark styles and signatures I love. The bottles are shaped like a woman's body, so it was great fun 'dressing' them. The Diet Coke motif is so pretty that it became a part of my design. The final touch consisted of placing my own logo onto the bottle, rather like a delicate stamp, to create something really special that's crying out to be touched."
Gaultier will work with the brand during the whole of 2012, with the results being rolled-out across Europe as well as on the web throughout the year: April will see the unveiling of the collector bottles dressed by the designer as well as the campaign posters shot by the famous photographer Stephane Sednaoui (who could forget his fantastic videos for Give It Away by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mysterious Ways by U2 and Ironic by Alanis Morissette!) Clips are already circulating on the web: these episodes of a web-series entitled The Night & Day Serial Designer feature Jean Paul playing the role of a psychologist, journalist and private detective, helping the brand's mascots (puppets Eleanor, Bernadette and Irene) to solve their fashion dilemmas... always with a light-hearted touch!
Triple-arm glasses, cameos, sailor tops... Fans of the designer will love the challenge of spotting all the references to his work in each video!
